This year 2023 marks the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Achebe’s blistering, 67-page critique The Trouble with Nigeria. Although focused on his nation, the 2023 general elections of which coincide with The Trouble with Nigeria’s print commemoration, that little book might as well be Achebe’s timeless meditation on leadership and statecraft in Africa. Is the glass of the nation-state and governance in Nigeria and Africa more broadly half-full, hall-empty, or full of opaque water, so to say?
To recast the title of Achebe’s essay volume, what impediments and hopes remain in those quests by Nigeria and other African nations for more just, prosperous, and life-fulfilling worlds?
